The Last Poem I'm Writing About You
I swear this is the last poem I’m going to write about you
But you know I’m a god awful liar
I wasn’t always this bad, but I swear you made me this way
You changed me each and every day
I just wasn’t what you were looking for
And by no means is that your fault
But when my heart is served to you on a platter
I really wish you wouldn’t play with your food
No really, I’m suffering all the heartache
Without any of the heartbreak
Because you never gave us a chance
It’s the weirdest analogy
I just wanted to test the waters
But you closed the beach
NO ROMANTICS ALLOWED
But I was never so proud
To have had such a sense of values
A strict set of rules
Each was broken as I tried to play it cool
But goddammit if you didn’t set my heart on fire
Lit up the wire that tied me to you
So quickly that as you scurried across this tight rope of a relationship
I was left to fall as each thread burned
Then even when I hit the bottom I still tried climbing the insurmountable mountain you call an expectation
Or maybe it was just you revelling in my degradation
It wasn’t even a humiliation
No one was laughing but me
Because it was all a bad joke
I mean I was the punchline
That just got dropped a little too early
And surely I must be out of my mind to not give up by now
Yet here I am in the dead of the night
Writing about my greatest fight
A battle of mind over matter
The smallest of matters that don’t matter
I know somewhere in my head I’m wondering if you’re sleeping
Or dreaming
And what of?
It sure as hell isn’t me
Because you’re mind is free
You are playing happily without knowing the rope didn’t burn through
It just curled
Into a noose
One that isn’t loose
As it constricts me
Breath fading
I’m waiting
For you to drop me again
